REVEALING HOW TO CREATE YOUR CONVERSATIONS IN FRENCH

Before I teach you some short French expressions, let’s define
your overall language goals that will introduce how to relate
more comfortably with French-speaking people.

Let’s get started!

1.Tell who and when you will be conversing with. What will you talk about and where will it happen? Examples: Do you want to communicate with your French spouse’s family, simply ask for what you want in a shop, or restaurant, or make a connection with someone? Make it specific.

Example: I will have a two-minute conversation with the waiter in a restau-rant in the south of France, talking about myself, my likes and my dislikes. OR: I will have a three-minute conversation in a store in Paris asking questions about the size, color of the garments I want to buy.

On a paper, please list your answer.

2. What would be the consequences of NOT learning French for you? Asking this question will help you see your highest goal or what you truly want.

For example, not learning French could be affecting a relationship, not getting married, or not having much fun on your vacations or being in a corner not speaking while your spouse is with his or her family (your in-laws.) If French is critical for your business, you could be missing out on sales to a large customer base, leaving you with a fraction of your potential income.

On a paper, please list your answer.

Congratulations! You’ve just defined your first conversational goals in French!

Now let’s practice a few quick and easy French expressions
that are used daily and that only a French person would
understand!

Pretty soon you will be able to relate to the attitude and
laissez-faire approach to thinking like a French native!

Since “He doesn’t look bad” = “He looks pretty good” (That’s a compliment on a man’s looks)

PHRASE 3

Pas terrible !
[pah tay-reebl]
It’s not terrible!
If something is “Not terrible”, it is still not something great. = So: “It’s mediocre”

PHRASE 4

Pas possible !
[pah po-seebl]
It’s not possible.
It’s not possible it is happening = No way! You have to be kidding me! Unbelievable! No, really? (Negative expression)

PHRASE 5

C’est pas vrai !
[say pah vray]
It’s not true!
“No way, that can’t be real!” Gasp of disbelief

PHRASE 6

C’est pas rien !
[say pah ryaN]
It’s not nothing.
It’s “not nothing”, then it’s quite a thing. = “It’s a lot” “J’ai visité trois pays en huit jours ! – Waouh ! C’est pas rien !” “I visited three countries in a week! – Wow, that’s a lot!”

C’est pas grave !
[say pah grahvv]
It’s not serious!
Since it’s not serious. Then, “It’s OK”. “J’ai oublié ton livre. – C’est pas grave !” “I forgot your book. – That’s OK!
